Frequently asked questions...

How do the online lessons work?

Online lessons will take place via Zoom. An online interactive whiteboard takes centre stage on the screen and resources are uploaded onto the whiteboard and both Fiona and student can annotate in real time.  Fiona has over 20 years experience of teaching maths and all questions within her work-packs have been carefully chosen to gain maximum impact. Students will have plenty of opportunity during each lesson to ask the teacher questions and gain support.

Why are more families choosing online tuition?

The growing popularity of online tuition is driven by families seeking access to the highest quality of educational support. By removing geographical barriers, online learning allows parents to choose a tutor with the right expertise and experience to meet their child's individual needs, regardless of location.

Online tuition also eliminates the time and inconvenience associated with travelling to and from lessons. Many students find that learning in the comfort of their own home helps them to feel more relaxed and focused. After a busy day at school, they can move seamlessly into their lesson and, once it has finished, continue with any follow-up work or simply enjoy their evening without the need for additional travel.

The online platforms used by Strategy Maths provide an effective and interactive learning environment, allowing students and tutors to share information easily. They also create a digital record of work completed, reducing the need for paper notes that can easily be misplaced.

How is my child kept safe online during the lesson?

The link to each meeting will only be made available to the parent via email. In addition to this, students will only be admitted to each individual meeting once verification from Fiona has taken place. Students are therefore asked to join the link a few minutes before each lesson starts so that Fiona can verify each request to join the meeting. This will ensure the lesson gets off to a prompt start.

Do students maintain their focus online?

Parents are often pleasantly surprised by how focused and engaged students are during online lessons.

Lessons are designed to incorporate a variety of activities, including short tasks, quizzes, and games, which help to maintain concentration and encourage active participation throughout the session. Many students report that they find online lessons particularly engaging, thanks to the wide range of digital resources and teaching strategies available.

Rather than simply listening passively, students are encouraged to think deeply, ask questions, and actively contribute, creating a dynamic learning environment that supports both understanding and enjoyment.

What about the relationship between student and tutor online?

Many students find that they feel more comfortable asking questions during online lessons. Learning from the familiarity of their own home can help students to feel more relaxed and confident, making it easier for them to seek clarification and engage actively in lessons.

Communication between tutor and student extends beyond the lesson itself. Students receive regular homework tasks, which are marked outside of lesson time and accompanied by detailed, guided feedback. This provides valuable opportunities for ongoing dialogue and helps to ensure that any misconceptions are identified and addressed promptly.

Through regular contact and ongoing assessment, Fiona quickly develops a detailed understanding of each student's strengths, areas for development, and preferred learning style. This enables lessons to be carefully tailored to provide the right balance of support, challenge, and encouragement, helping every student to make excellent progress.
